USA*Engage Statement on Announcement of Additional U.S. Sanctions on Russia

Thursday, 17 July 2014
Washington, DC – In response to yesterday’s announcement by the Administration of additional U.S. sanctions on Russia, USA*Engage Director Richard Sawaya issued the following statement:

“The additional financial sanctions implemented by the Administration appear to diverge substantially from those announced by the European Union. It is probable this will result in additional pressure on present operations and prospective investment in Russia by U.S. companies.

“On the other hand, ongoing violence in Ukraine gives no sign of settlement. As many informed observers have noted, resolving the facts on the ground will entail the collective engagement of Ukraine, the European Union, Russia and the United States. We hope this imperative will condition any further consideration of U.S. sanctions targeting Russia.”
