USA*Engage Welcomes U.N. Security Council Sanctions Resolution on Libya

Monday, 28 February 2011
Washington, DC – USA*Engage today welcomed a resolution unanimously adopted on Saturday by the United Nations Security Council, as well as the corresponding EU action, which includes imposing multilateral sanctions against Qadhafi, his family and certain Libyan officials. The association released the following statement.
"We commend world leaders for coming together to condemn the violence and grave human rights violations occurring in Libya, and imposing targeted multilateral sanctions against Qadhafi, his family and key individuals in the regime complicit in the violent repression of Libyan civilians.
"The situation and conditions on the ground for Libyan citizens and foreign nationals have only worsened in recent days at the hands of the Qadhafi regime. The UN Security Council and EU sanctions resolutions are specific, clear and direct message to the Libyan authorities that the world is watching and is holding them accountable.
"While some members of the UN, including the Unites States, are seeking to impose unilateral sanctions against the regime, we believe it is in the best interest of the people of Libya to take action in concert with the rest of the international community. Only through highly targeted multilateral action can we hope to make the most meaningful impact on the Qadhafi regime, help the Libyan people, and avoid counterproductive consequences."
